It has been 65 years since John McCarthy first proposed the concept of “Artificial Intelligence” at the Dartmouth Conference in the summer of 1956. The rapid development of AI technology has made it an indispensable strategic technology for the new round of technological revolution and industrial change, profoundly changing the way of production and life and thinking patterns of human beings and achieving an overall leap in social productivity. The breakthrough of AI technology is being made day by day, and the future once thought to be distant is being driven towards us.

As one of the leading regions in the development of artificial intelligence in China, Shanghai should give full play to the “Wild Goose Queue Effect,” take AI as an important driving force to comprehensively promote the digital transformation of the city, make greater strides in building a smart economy, creating a smart life, and shaping smart governance. With the accelerated establishment of Shanghai’s internationally influential “AI Highland,” the city is planning to become the best AI pilot land and a leading player.

WAIC 2023 will keep playing the roles of “technology leader, application showcase, industry accelerator, and governance council”, establishing four core sections, including the conference and forum, display and exhibition, contest and award, and experience of applications, gathering top scientists, entrepreneurs, government officials, experts and scholars, international organizations, investors, start-up teams, and more, and building world-class cooperation and exchange platforms, showing China's wisdom and Shanghai's solutions to the world, so as to offer new opportunities to the rest of the world when China is undergoing robust development.

Gathering of the World's AI Leaders

At the WAIC 2023 opening ceremony, Elon Musk, the technology leader and founder and CEO of Tesla, delivered the keynote speech. In his speech, he shared his visionary insights on general artificial intelligence in the new era, introduced the latest explorations of his team in the frontier technologies of AI, and highlighted the latest applications in vertical fields such as humanoid robots and autonomous driving. He stated that the ratio of computational power between computers and humans is rapidly increasing each year, resulting in a widening gap between machines and biology. This will lead to fundamental changes that will profoundly impact and influence the future of human civilization. Therefore, the present time is the most critical period for human civilization.

Building a Better Future of AI Together

At this crucial moment when humanity enters the era of AI, discussions surrounding digital governance, digital ethics, and civilizational development have become hot topics in 2023.  The opening ceremony of WAIC 2023 directly addressed the risks and challenges, responded to concerns, highlighted the benefits of AI, and fostered collaborative consensus.

As a platform that connects global wisdom and voices from China, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Global AI Alliance for Industry and Manufacturing was officially established during the WAIC 2023 opening ceremony. Simultaneously, the "UNIDO International Center for Excellence in Industrial and Manufacturing AI Development" was announced. This serves as an important platform for Shanghai to deepen its participation in international AI cooperation and jointly build a more prosperous form of human civilization amidst the backdrop of the development and transformation of next-generation AI technologies.
