Are Kids' Smartwatches Safe? A Parent's Buying Checklist

Kids' smartwatches have surged in popularity as parents seek ways to keep their children safe while granting them independence. These devices offer GPS tracking, SOS alerts, and even video calling—features that provide peace of mind. However, concerns about data privacy, screen time, and cybersecurity risks raise an important question: Are kids' smartwatches safe? This guide explores the pros, cons, and essential safety features parents should look for before buying.

In recent years, the proliferation of kids' smartwatches has sparked a debate among parents about their safety and appropriateness for children. These devices, equipped with features like GPS tracking, two-way communication, and educational apps, have become increasingly popular. However, alongside their convenience, concerns about privacy, security, and health risks have emerged, prompting parents to carefully consider whether these devices are suitable for their children. Are Kids’ Smartwatches Safe?

Parents love smartwatches because they combine safety features with limited functionality—unlike smartphones, which can be distracting. Some key benefits include:

• GPS tracking: Lets parents monitor their child's location in real time.
• SOS buttons: Kids can send emergency alerts instantly.
• Geofencing: Alerts parents if a child leaves a designated safe zone.
• Limited calling/texting: Restricts communication to approved contacts.
• No social media: Reduces exposure to online risks.

However, not all smartwatches are created equal. Some have faced criticism for weak security, exposing kids to potential risks.

While smartwatches offer great benefits, they also come with risks. Here are the top concerns parents should be aware of:

Some smartwatches collect sensitive data, including location history and voice recordings. If poorly secured, hackers could access this information. A 2023 study found that several budget smartwatches lacked encryption, making them vulnerable.

Just like any internet-connected device, smartwatches can be hacked. Researchers have demonstrated how attackers could intercept GPS signals or even remotely activate the microphone.

Kids may become too dependent on smartwatches, reducing their ability to navigate the world independently. Parents must balance safety with fostering critical thinking skills.

Even limited smartwatch features can contribute to excessive screen time. Some models include games or videos, which may distract kids from real-world interactions.

Not all smartwatches are risky—many prioritize security and responsible usage. Here’s a checklist to help you pick the safest option:

• Strong encryption: Ensure the device uses end-to-end encryption for data.
• Parental controls: Look for apps that let you manage contacts and features.
• No unnecessary data collection: Avoid watches that store voice recordings or detailed location logs.
• Reputable brands: Stick to well-known companies with a track record of security.
• Durable design: Kids are rough on gadgets—waterproof and shockproof models last longer.

Based on safety features and parent reviews, these models stand out:

1. Gabb Watch 3: No internet, GPS tracking, and SOS alerts.
2. TickTalk 5: Secure 4G LTE, geofencing, and parental-approved contacts.
3. Apple Watch SE (Family Setup): Robust encryption and emergency calling.

Kids' smartwatches can be a great safety tool—if chosen wisely. Focus on security, parental controls, and durability when making a purchase. Always discuss digital safety with your child to ensure they use the device responsibly.
